About the Program

Scholarly engagement with the Indo‑Pacific's strategic agenda

The IPSC Visiting Scholars Fellowship is designed for established academics and senior researchers who wish to engage formally with IPSC's research community and academic programs without undertaking a full research fellowship.

Visiting Scholars attend the core seminar series of either the Master of Pacific and Strategic Intelligence (MPSI) or the Geopolitical Risk Program, and are affiliated with an IPSC research center for the duration of their fellowship term.

The fellowship runs for 12 weeks and is held entirely remotely. Visiting Scholars are listed on the IPSC website and may engage with IPSC's publication and research networks during their term.

Eligibility

Who can apply

The Visiting Scholars Fellowship is intended for senior academics and researchers with an established record in their field. It is distinct from the Visiting Research Fellowship, which is open to a broader range of career stages.

Senior Academics

Associate professors, professors, and senior lecturers with a sustained publication record in strategic studies, international relations, or a related field.

Senior Policy Researchers

Experienced researchers from think tanks, policy institutes, or government-adjacent bodies with recognised expertise in Indo-Pacific affairs.

Retired or Emeritus Scholars

Emeritus academics and retired senior practitioners who remain active in research, writing, or policy engagement.

Distinguished Independent Scholars

Independent researchers with a demonstrable publication and engagement record equivalent to senior academic standing.

Visiting Scholars attend the core seminar series of one of two IPSC programs. Select the track that best complements your scholarly expertise and interests.

Master of Pacific and Strategic Intelligence (MPSI)

How to apply

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline.

Review IPSC's eight research centers and identify the one most relevant to your scholarly expertise. Center affiliation is required in your application.

Select your program track
Indicate whether you wish to attend the core seminar series of the MPSI or the Geopolitical Risk Program.

Prepare your application materials
Prepare a current CV, a brief statement of scholarly interest (400–600 words), and your proposed fellowship start date.

Submit via the application form
Complete the application form below. All materials must be submitted in English. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Decision & confirmation
Decisions are communicated within 3–4 weeks. Successful applicants receive a fellowship offer letter and fee payment instructions.

How is the Visiting Scholars Fellowship different from the Visiting Research Fellowship?
The Visiting Scholars Fellowship is designed for established senior academics and researchers. It is a lighter-touch affiliation centered on program seminar access and scholarly engagement. The Visiting Research Fellowship is a more structured program that requires a defined research proposal and expected written output.
Is attendance at seminars mandatory?
Yes. Participation in the core seminar series of your chosen program track is a requirement of the fellowship. Seminars are held online and scheduled to accommodate international time zones where possible.
Does the fellowship require relocation or in-person attendance?
No. The fellowship is entirely non-residential. All program seminars and engagements are conducted online.
Can I hold the fellowship alongside my current position?
Yes. The fellowship is structured to be compatible with an active academic or professional role. Scholars are expected to attend program seminars and engage with their affiliated research center during the term.
Is a research output required?
Unlike the Visiting Research Fellowship, the Visiting Scholars Fellowship does not require a formal research output. Scholars are encouraged but not obligated to contribute commentary or papers through IPSC's publication channels.
