About the Program

The IPSC Regional Research Associate (RRA) Program is a voluntary initiative that empowers emerging scholars and analysts across the Indo-Pacific to contribute grounded, regionally informed insights to global policy conversations. RRAs support IPSC’s mission by offering localised research, commentary, and strategic perspectives from within their communities. By connecting rising thinkers to a transnational network of Indo-Pacific expertise, the program ensures IPSC’s work remains locally rooted and globally relevant.

Who Should Apply

We invite expressions of interest from early-career professionals, postgraduates, and advanced students who are passionate about shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific. Ideal candidates will:

  • Reside in or have deep expertise on a region within the Indo-Pacific, including:

    • South Asia

    • Southeast Asia

    • Northeast Asia

    • Pacific Island States

    • Taiwan and Cross-Strait

    • Indo-Africa engagement regions

    • Diaspora hubs (US, UK, EU)

Applicants should demonstrate a clear interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • Foreign and strategic policy

  • Climate and environmental diplomacy

  • Maritime security and the blue economy

  • Regional governance and democratic transitions

  • Cybersecurity and emerging technologies

  • Human rights, development, and public health

  • Geoeconomics, trade, and connectivity

A strong written communication style, regional awareness, and a commitment to public knowledge and non-partisan analysis are highly valued.

Role Description (Voluntary)

The Regional Research Associate (RRA) role is a voluntary, non-resident position designed to connect regionally grounded thinkers with IPSC’s global knowledge ecosystem. Associates contribute to IPSC’s mission by providing local insights, supporting research, and engaging in strategic discussions on Indo-Pacific affairs.

Time Commitment
Approximately 5-8 hours per month (flexible and remote).

Expected Contributions
Associates may contribute through:

  • Writing short regional commentaries or insights (800–1,000 words)

  • Providing research assistance or data contributions

  • Supporting IPSC webinars or forums with outreach, note-taking, or post-event reflections

  • Participating in occasional IPSC associate briefings or collaborative projects

Output Frequency
Minimum of one substantive output per quarter.
Additional contributions are welcomed and acknowledged.

 

Benefits to Associates

Regional Research Associates are valued contributors to IPSC’s regional knowledge ecosystem. While the position is voluntary, Associates receive meaningful recognition, access, and visibility through their participation.

Certificate of Recognition
All Associates receive a formal IPSC certificate acknowledging their contribution at the end of each term.

Publishing Opportunities
RRAs are eligible to contribute to IPSC platforms, including Indo-Pacific Contours, IPSC Commentary Series, and special briefings, with editorial support provided.

Network Access
Associates are invited to participate in IPSC briefings, workshops, and digital forums, connecting with a broad network of scholars, policy practitioners, and regional experts.

Regional Visibility
Outstanding contributions may be spotlighted through IPSC social media, newsletters, and thematic publications.

Pathway to Fellowship
Active Associates demonstrating strong commitment and high-quality output may be invited to apply for future IPSC Non-Resident Fellow roles.
