S38 Navy Reclassifies 19 Virginia-Class VPM Submarines as SSGNs

The VPM adds an approximately 84-foot hull section amidships, increasing each boat's total Tomahawk-class weapon capacity to approximately 65 missiles. The first vessel under the new SSGN designation (SSGN 803) is scheduled for delivery in fiscal year 2029, with the remaining boats to follow through fiscal year 2038. The Ohio-class SSGNs being replaced – USS Georgia (inactivating), USS Ohio, USS Florida and USS Michigan – are scheduled to leave service in fiscal years 2026–2029, creating a strike-capacity gap during transition. The War Zone assessed that each Ohio SSGN carries the missile equivalent of approximately four Block V/VI Virginia SSGNs.
